Amplify Community Voices.

Empower Action.

Elevate Impact.

Participatory photovoice approaches for authentic community engagement.

Our approach.

Empower Action utilizes participatory photovoice approaches to recognize unique community assets and cultural wealth, amplify community voices and diverse perspectives, elevate lived experiences, and educate stakeholders. We take a justice-centered, equity-focused approach that values space and place, putting community at the forefront of collaboration. Our creative storytelling approach to teaching and learning, advocacy, community asset-mapping, team training, program development, and impact evaluation serves to empower action and cultivate authentic impact.

We provide consultations as a trusted thought-partner, as well as participatory, photovoice-centered workshops, program development, program facilitation, evaluation design, data collection/analysis, and event planning. We have experience working with communities and organizations of all types, and extensive expertise utilizing photovoice with youth, underrepresented communities, first-generation college students, and as a research methodology.

One photo…A thousand words.

Photovoice is a tool that puts the power of the narrative in the hands of those living the experience. Using photographs to convey meaning, photovoice breaks down barriers, allowing those often not heard (or misheard) the opportunity to articulate possibilities in a way that transforms communities. From teaching and learning, advocacy, research, and evaluation, photovoice approaches to community engagement provide an alternative/additional way of seeking, seeing, and doing towards collective empowerment and impact.

What our collaborators say:

  • “Amanda is passionate about helping organizations, institutions and communities thrive - she wants you to succeed! Her energy, hands-on approach, and possibilities perspective is inspiring.”

    — GEORGE LUC, GivePulse Founder & CEO

  • “Amanda’s photovoice workshop gave me the tools to create an amazing project for my college students and Latinx students at the local high school. From brainstorming ideas to program design she was there every step of the way! Photovoice gave these students a way to express themselves and make a real impact. We need more of this in the community engagement space!”

    — ANITA NADAL, Teaching Assistant Professor, Virginia Commonwealth University

  • “After attending multiple workshops designed and facilitated by Dr. Amanda Hall centered around eliciting critical reflection in service-learning classrooms, I walked away with an impressive toolkit of innovative techniques to design high-impact assignments for my students, enabling them to think more deeply about the reciprocal nature of the work they were doing in the community. Similarly, Dr. Hall guided several of my teaching assistants through ways to not just arrive at transformational reflections, but to document those reflections through mediums such as Photovoice, equipping them with the necessary skills to share their service stories with a broader audience.”
